Clack, clack. Clack, clack. Clack, clack. The sound my shoes made as I walked down the long, stone hallway reverberated off the walls and made my approach all the more noticeable.
I had been trying for weeks to listen to my parents' meetings with their advisors; I could tell something was wrong. My parents, lords of the South Atlantic ocean, were usually very open and friendly to me and my twin sister, Andrea. They were only occasionally stand-off-ish, and this entire month had been one of those occasions.
Of course, Andrea thought I was over-reacting. There were times that I wanted to smack her in the face, but then I remembered she was my sister and that that kind of behavior would not be tolerated. It was me who thought my actions out like this. I looked at all possible outcomes, and other options before making a decision. Andrea, however, was rather impulsive and made her decisions with a two minute notice. Perhaps that was why I noticed my parents' strange behavior. Could I have been over-reacting, and maybe they were just really busy? Only one way to find out....
On the left was the door that led to the Conference Room. On the right was the Game Room, where, on his normal days, my father would while away the time playing poker or shooting darts. My mother, on the other hand, talked to my sister and I about our problems, or spent hours in the kitchen inventing new recipes, leaving plenty of mess for the servants when she was finished. The door was ajar....
"...don't know what the fuss is about, I say we just stay out of it. His ocean, his rules." I heard the fast, anxious voice of my parents' top advisor, Afonso Feitosa. He reminded me of a ferret. Quick, nervous, nosy...I leaned closer to the door.
"I understand it is not our jurisdiction, Feitosa. However, in order to protect our world, we must step in." My mother's sweet honey voice floated outside. I couldn't have found a more perfect hiding place.
"But think of the damage it could cause to our empire!" Feitosa exclaimed vehemently, almost forgetting the respect he had to show to the lord of the South Atlantic ocean.
All of a sudden, another voice, not from in the Conference Room, but from the other end of the hall, shouted loud enough to end the conversation I had been eavesdropping on. "Hey!! What are you doing, Sonia?" My sister Andrea's loud voice made me wince, and no sooner had I turned to yell at her than the door in front of me opened, and my father's long, tired face was peaking through the crack. "Trying to eavesdrop again, are we, Sonia?" He said with a smile.

Andrea had just spent the last 30 minutes flirting the stable boy into letting her ride her fathers horse, Hidalgo only to be caught about to jump onto his back. She cursed the old stable hand under her breath, she had been dying to ride him ever since he arrived from Spain (which had only been yesterday morning). Oh well, maybe late tonight while everyone was asleep... yeah, that sounded good. And with that she drifted off into a day dream where she was on Hidalgo, who was in a full out run, around their property.
So caught up in her lovely day dream, she tripped up all three steps leading into the house and over the rug at the entrance hall.
"Ouch..." she groaned, picking herself up from the floor. She huffed, then looked around looking for.. life? Where was everyone? Lunch break? Possibly. She kicked off her shoes and padded around the house, moving quickly and silently and scaring the hell out of a few servants. Why were they all stuck up? Or maybe they're just sick of me.
"CONFERENCE ROOM, DUH!" Andrea said, after 5 minutes of aimless wandering. She ran to it, slid around the corner, and saw Sonia walking toward the double door.
"Hey, SONIA! Whatcha doing?" she yelled before thinking, and when she was halfway to Sonia their fathers face at the crack of the door.
"Trying to eavesdrop again, are we, Sonia?" He said with a smile. Whoops...

I gave him a slight smile. "You know me, Dad." Then I rounded on my sister once he had disappeared into the Conference Room, and shut it with a small click. "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU! Keep quiet for once in your life!"
"When will you let it go, Sonia?"
"When I find out what they're so worried about! It's never been like this before." They set off down the hall. And I not knowing where Andrea was going to lead me, was surprised when we passed the librarty and walked out to the stables.
"What are we doing here?" I asked suspiciously.
"Nothing" Andrea muttered unconvincingly, walking over to one of the stable boys.
"Nothing, huh?" I said to myself before walking to the end of the row of horses, where a great Palomino was pacing around, watching me with polite curiosity. I smiled and opened the gate, setting him up to ride. "Would you like to ride today, Balduino?" I cooed to the horse, who responded by stomping his feet with a slight impatience on the ground: Yes.
While preparing Balduino, I felt eyes on the back of my neck. Turning, I saw the kind, innocently handsome face of Sergio, the head chef of the castle. His father and mine had been long time friends, so he was allowed more free reign than most other servants. He often came out to the stables, as did Andrea and I.
Trying not to stutter as I chanced a glance at his deep caramel and honey colored eyes, I opened my mouth to speak. "Good day, Senhor Herdade." I bowed slightly, absentmindedly tucking a peice of stray hair behind my ear.
"Good day to you too, Princess Sonia." This reply came with a dazzilingly white smile.
"What's for lunch today, may I inquire?"
"Of course you may. I was thinking black bean stew and rice, with some coconut pudding."
"Hmm...Excellent as always but do you think anyone would mind if we switched coconut pudding to a marvelous Brazilian custard?"
"That is definitely do-able. It will be prepared as beautifully as you present yourself every day." With that, he smiled another bright array of white teeth, and walked back to the kitchens." I sighed heavily.

“WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU! Keep quiet for once in your life!" Sonia hissed, but I just merely rolled my eyes and kept walking.
“Oh, just let it go, Sonia.” Why did she always feel the need to over react? Or maybe it was me, who had the emotional range of a tea spoon - happy, and depressed. Naw, it was her. What she needed was a good long sit with a book, but the image of Hidalgo popped into my head and I walked right by the library and to the main door, grabbed my shoes and put them on while trying to keep walking. I hopped the steps and made right to the open stable doors, my eyes opened for one person in particular. “Hello Deigo,” I said cheerfully, walking toward the youngest and newst help. He looked over and, realizing it was me who was talking to him, got a little flustered, almost dropping his brush and and hoof pick. Awe, how cute. I walked to him and linked my arm with he smiled down at me.
“Hello Andrea,” he said calmly. He was by far my favorite, he actually treated me like a person and not an fragile little egg. And he was all for my little schemes... “I can see the gears working, what are you planning?”
I smirked and said far too calmly, “I’m going to riding Hidalgo today.”
That made him come to an abrupt halt while I kept walking, and him being larger I was pulled back, “You’re going to do what!?”
“You heard me,” I said smiling, letting go of him and hurried to the horse that had been making noise since it first heard my voice. I opened the door and the little Arabian filly pranced around the stall, turning and swishing her tail and moving her head up and down. “Hey Esmeralda, how are you?” She whinneyed and nuzzled Andrea.
“How long does it take for you to saddle up a horse?” I asked Deigo.
“About 4 minutes...why?” He asked suspiciously.
“Okay, so here’s the plan. I’m going to get mad at you and banish you from my horses stall. I will draw all the stable hands to this stall and you will saddle up Hidalgo and take him to the forest.” I whispered, and by the end of my plan he was grimacing and I was smiling.
“But...” he started, I interrupted him
“Oh c’mon Deigo, I thought you were always in for my plans. What happened?” I looked up at him from under my lashes batting them three times. Don’t over do it, you.
He sighed and ruffled the back of his hair, “It’s not that I don’t want to, it’s that I can’t... I can’t ride Hidalgo...” He looked embarrassed, and I was a bit confused.
“Yes you can, I give you permission.”
“No, I mean I can’t ride him. Physically,” He gave a sigh, he obviously didn’t want to tell me, must be a pride thing, but he gave me a look and told me anyways, “When he first got here, after your father examined him, I was dared to get on him. I got on him, bareback, and when I nudged him forward he bucked me off.”
“Oh... well that was only once, I’m sure he was just tired from the boat ride and didn’t want to be ridden.” I said reassuringly.
“Maybe...” he still looked wearily.
“Okay, don’t ride him, run him over to the trees. You can ride Esmeralda. She likes you.” She nickered and nuzzled his hand, backing me up. Good girl.
“Okay. I’ll do it. But I’ll need 10 minutes, can you do that?” he asked.
I rolled my eyes, smiled, then started shrieking, “ WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING? HAVE YOU NO SENSE AT ALL? GET OUT OF THIS STALL. WORTHLESS” I picked up the brush form the railing and threw it, making sure it hit the back wall of an empty stall. The sound of boots on dirt sounded and Sergio jumped over the stall door.
“What’s going on?” Asked one of the other stable hands. Deigo shook his head and pointed angry at me, opened his mouth to speak, shoot his head and ripped off his hat and stalked off.
“Miss, what’s wrong?”
“The idiot! Can’t clean out a hoof properly! Can’t brush her down!” I worked myself up into a frenzy, pacing the stall and pulling my hair and looking angry. “Well, what are you standing around for? GET TO IT, I WANT AN AFTERNOON RIDE WHILE IT’S STILL AFTERNOON!’ They practically tripped over themselves to get in. Five people... how many stable hands could there be? This will be easy.
But after 5 minutes of telling them they were doing a poor job, Esmeralda looked very well kept. She was clearly enjoying the attention.
“Is all in order, miss?” One asked tentatively.
“Hrm... Braid her tail. Use those ribbons.” I pointed to a large bucket filled with ribbons of every color. They look lovely in her light brown tail. I moved to her face and started humming. Just like her owner, Esmeralda loved to dance. Give her a melody and she’d start to move, and if you played music she’d be prancing around. I didn’t want to make it obvious, so I hummed, pulled myself onto the half door and sat there, humming and enjoying myself as the stable hands struggled to keep her still. “C’mon men, she’s only a little filly!” Well, so am I and there is no controlling me. Oh well.
It took them about 10 more minutes to finish the braid, a very crooked and ugly braid. Men. “No, it’s all wrong. Undo it. I will go get her saddle and bridle.
I threw one leg over, so I was straddling the fence, then I threw the other, then hopped off. Once I was out of sight, I ran to the end where Sonia was and poked my head in and grinned. She was drolling over the head chef again. I laughed a little and decided to check on Sergio. I poked my head outside and scanned the trees, and in the shadows there was movement. Okay, good. So I went back to Sonia and coughed loudly.
“I’m going for a ride, if you two want to come, better saddle up some horses!” and I dashed off, not wanting to inturrept them too much. I grabbed Esmeralda's bridle, threw it over my shoulder, and grabbed her lighter saddle and was halfway to Esmeralda’s stall when the idea of riding in this stupid skirt would be very limited to movement.
“Here guys, saddle her up. I’ll be back”
When they lived in Portugal, their dad was a big far of the races. He use to have a few race horses, and, naturally, jockeys. Small little guys, as big as me. And we still had their gear, some where... and I was on the hunt for them. With a laugh of victory, I kicked off everything under my skirt, then pulled up the pants. Off with the skirt and on with the riding boots. Of course, everyone freaked out, but I ave them a glare and they shut up.
I lead Esmeralda out, put a foot in the stirrup and hoped up. I didn’t even need a leg up for her, she was the perfect height. I walked her over to Balduino stall, “So, Sonia, how do I look?” Esmeralda pranced around and did a few short circles.
HOLY SHIT THAT WAS LONG (that's what she said)

"Oh dear. You find any excuse to wear pants." I smiled at my little joke, and climbed on Balduino. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Sergio watching from the kitchen window. I smiled and waved, then began to race Andrea. "You'll never beat me!" I yelled, with a 20 feet headstart.

"Of course I will!" I said, kicking Esmeralda into a full gallop, laughing with happiness. She hadn't had a chance to run Esmeralda in a long time, and Esme had a lot of pent up energy and she was letting it all go. They were closing on Balduino's butt, then they were side by side. Sure, Balduino's stride was longer, but he was heavier. Esme was swift and small and sleek and she didn't have to carry a huge rider on her back. "C'mon Esme~" and with a last bit of effort she gave her last it of strength and jumped forward, passing horse and rider.
10 feet away from the trees, Esmeralda showed down into a canter and into the trees where I stopped by the anxious looking Deigo and smiled.

Resisting the urge to come to a sudden halt and spray mud in my sister's face, I jumped lightly off of Balduino and greeted Diego. Then, I saw Hidalgo. A great horse with a vengeful-looking face, it was no surprise that Andrea would want to ride him. However, it was a surprise that she would stray so far from our father's guidance, which told us not to ride the angry Hidalgo.
"I hope you can calm that horse," I nodded to Hidalgo. "Others have been having trouble with him."
"Don't worry about me sis, but I advise you stand back. Thanks Deigo." She smiled at him from under her lashes and I shook my head with a smile on my face.
"Save that smile for Sergio," Andrea advised, with a wink.

I was about to get a leg up on Hidalgo, but stopped, "Lets go to the clearing."
Diego looked around and nodded in agreement, took back the reins and tugged for Hidalgo to come. The horse snorted and threw his head back, almost ripping the lead out of Deigo's hand, then charged a few steps forward so he was in front of Diego. Leading, and not being lead.
"Well, you know who's boss, dontcha Deigo?" I called to him from behind as we walked down the one-man path, Sonia bringing up the rear... I would randomly stop Esme which lead Balduino to run into Esme and I would pick up her pace before he bit her butt and she kicked him in the face. Once they reached the lovely large and mossy clearing, I handed Esme's reins to Diego.
"Careful" he warned.
"Careful is my middle name!" I gave him a wink and took Hidalgos reins', ready to work my horse magic.
"Lets go," I whispered to him, taking a step forward, careful not to tug on the reins. After a moment of decision, he walked beside me till we were in the middle of the clearing. He was far bigger than little Esme, but he didn't scare me. Much. I petted his velvety nose, humming, until he relaxed and brought his head down, then I just ran my hand from between his ears down to his nose until his eyes closed (which took a while, admitidly ). I took a breath and stopped petting him and his eyes opened at once. "Can I sit on your back?" I asked him, moving away from his head and walking to the saddle, my hand trailing down his neck. I gave Deigo a look, and he came over slowly, in full view of Hidalgo, and walked neck to me, bending down a bit and interlocking his fingers so I could put my foot in it. instead of first putting my left foot in the saddle, I put my foot in his hand, then tested out the saddle, making sure Hidalgo wouldn't buck me off. He shifted, but was good. Diego hefted me up onto his back where I sat ridged. I almost screamed when Hidalgo started to move, but he just walked to the lining of trees and turned to the left. I smiled.
After a lap, I took up the reins and tried to turn him in the opposite direction. He listened. After another lap I squeezed my legs and he went into a trot. Another squeeze and he was in the fluid canter. His muscles rippling under the saddle.
"Wow" I heard Deigo say as we passed him.

"She's good with horses." I told Diego. "I'm better with boys " "I saw you turning the charm on Sergio back there." Diego said with a smile, which soon faded into a disapproving line on his mouth. "You know your father wouldn't approve of you dating a cook." I sighed. This is what I had been fearing. "I know. I won't tell him now, though. Too much stress for him." I threw him a suspicious side glance. "Do you know what's got him so worried?" "Sorry, your majesty. No idea. Didn't notice anything was bothering him." "Hmm...Okay."

I could feel Hidalgo getting anxious. He slowed down to a trot and the to a walk, but he was prancing, eager to move.
"HE WANTS TO RUN!" I called to Diego and Sonia. And with that I steered him to another trail that lead to a bigger clearing... and a waterfall. He'd have plenty of room to run there.
"Wait, Andrea, don't-" Diego started, but she nudged Hidalgo into a trot, without even bothering to look back. Neither did Hidalgo., "Better go after her..." Diego said, and hopped up onto Esmeralda, who huffed under the extra weight. She tossed her head and followed Hidalgo. After 10 minutes of riding the distance roar of a waterfall could be heard, and another 10 minutes later the path cleared into a large clearing with soft short grass.
"Lets run!" Andrea said once they cleared the low branches, and Hidalgo bolted, almost knocking Andrea off. Almost. They ran to one end and he sun around and ran back to the trail, right at Diego and Esmeralda who were just coming out of the trees. Esmeralda reared and Diego yelled and Hidalgo veered away from them at the last minute and kept running. H ran until his sides were heaving and Andrea pulled him down to a walk. She walked him back to Diego who looked paler than usual, but still composed.
"I remember the last man who tried to ride him like that... Hidalgo ran and ran and ran and stopped. The man went flying. I know you're good with horses but no one is this good."
"Don't doubt my charm," I said smiling, wagging a finger at him and patted Hidalgos neck. "I know this will sound strange, but I think he knows I'm a girl... and he wants to show off." Diego raised an eyebrow, but after a minute nodded in agreement.
"You might be right.. Maybe Sonia should try riding him." He smirked, taking a glance at Sonia. Andrea and Diego burst out laughing.

"I might not be able to beat you at riding horses, Andrea, but I can beat you at plenty of other things." I replied scathingly, unharmed by their remarks. Balduino and I trotted over to where Andrea and Diego were with their horses. The sky had suddnely turned pink, with some orange undertones; night was almost upon them. I breathed in the fresh air, jumped off Balduino, and took my shoes off. I set into a perfect rendition of Swanilda's final performance in Coppelia. "I'm better at dancing, for example."

I raised an eyebrow, jumped off Hidalgo, and did the same moves as Sonia. "Oh, you may be a better dance, but I look better doing it." I gave her a wink and ran off to the waterfall, climbed till I was 10 feet above the water, turned around, and back flipped off the rock, landing with a big splash.

"Backflip. Cute." My smile had vanished. Stepping back, I got a running start and performed a round off, back handspring, back tuck, two whip-backs, another back tuck and a double-back layout with a full twist. "Let's see you do better than that."
Walking over to Diego, I wrapped my leg around his waist and started kissing his neck. "Who looks better now, Diego?"
"Y-you do, Ms. Sonia."

I swam gracefully on my back until my hands hit the dirt, turned around and walked up out of the water, my wet clothes sticking to my body hiding nothing. I wasn't to bad off, either.
"Y-you do, Ms. Sonia." Diego said, a little dazed, until he saw me. His mouth dropped, and for added effect I shook my head - to get rid of the extra water, of course - and then fluffed it up a bit.
"Are you sure, Diego?" I asked with a honey voice. He didn't answer, but the look on his face made his answer obvious. I gave Sonia a smug smile.

Laughing, I got back on Balduino and we cantered ahead of them. "At least I'm the most mature and I can walk away from a fight!"
I went past the waterfall, deeper into the jungle. Realizing something, I turned and said "Hey guys...Do you remember how to get back?"
Diego burst into laughter. "Wow, Sonia, I sure don't. Your dad's gonna kill me...getting you two lost like this. And it's nearly evening. You should return for supper."
"I think you're right..." said Andrea. "But let's stay out a liiiiiitlle bit longer, please?"
"Sure, why not." Diego responded, laughing. But I could see the regret in his eyes as soon as he said these words, because Andrea and I rode full speed into the forest, Diego trailing behind.
After about 10 minutes of carefree riding, they were definitely lost. The darkness was settling upon them. "Um, guys...maybe we should go back." I said, already turning around. A few minutes later, I stared around hopelessly in the forest, nothing but trees around me. I could not find where we came from behind the waterfall.
"Um...yeah, so, we're lost?" Andrea asked. I nodded in agreement, and, choosing a log to sit on, I said, "Dad's going to be angry anyway. We should just stay outside...Give him more of a reason to yell."

"Oh, because we always need to give him more reasons to be mad," I said sarcastically, but I was oddly cheerful.
"Your dad is going to kill me, guys." Diego said, sounding very worried.
"Yeah, especially when we tell him you lead us in the wrong direction on purpose," I said straight faced, looking away from him before adding, "and having your way with us."
"WHAT, No Andrea yo-" Diego started, but I turned to him and gave him my little smirk and he glared. Then smiled. Then rolled his eyes. Hidalgo stomped his feet with impatience.
"Lets go find a decent place to sleep," I tugged the reins in the right way and lead out little group through the trees, within twenty minutes the trees had cleared and they could hear the waves lapping at the beach, "Perfect spot! We can tie up the horses to that log and then we'll go on a firewood hunt"

"Yaaaay firewood hunt! Our parents used to take us camping here, remember?" I asked, reminiscing.
Balduino, who was drinking the water from the shore, had a beautiful white coat that shimmered in the moonlight. I stroked his back absentmindedly, remembering the stories our father told us while we were here camping.
"Andrea, Sonia" A younger king, with shoulder length, curly dark blond hair and an excited face, beckoned his two little girls to sit with him at the campfire. His wife, a beautiful black haired, a queen, was strolling along the shore. The manic glint in my father's eyes told me that he only wanted Andrea and I to know this story. He had been waiting for our mother to wander off before pulling us in and filling our heads with what she considered dangerous fairytales.
"When I was in my late teens, my best friend and I were the best pirates around. After a while, we became pirate commanders, leading fleets of heavily armed ships into areas, giving food to the people, curing the sick, and battling the enemies.
When we were in the South China sea, we came across dragons. Yes, dragons, Andrea! They were huge! 10 times the size of our largest ship, with these great black wings! You know many people were jealous of my best friend and I. They knew we were strong and gaining recognition. So, they tried to attack us, and the greatest battle I ever fought in commenced, on the enemy's ship. We slashed and pierced with our swords. Finally we defeated all of them. However...I could not find my friend. I believe he ran off the China, scared. I haven't heard from him since and can only assume he's dead...But anyway, on that ship, I found a prisoner...Your mother! Beautiful, black haire, green eyes, adorable freckles. It was love at first sight. I stopped worrying about being a pirate because she thought it was too dangerous of course, but I took up a governmental position and now I'm the king! I owe your mother everything."
Whether or not the dragons were real, Andrea and I fell asleep under the stars that night, as we did tonight.

I laid on my back, looking up trying to find the constellations, and after only finding the Big and Little Dipper I whispered to Diego ,"How did the ancient people figure out the stars? How they saw how the stars were made into shapes? Like Pisces looks nothing like two fish." "I suppose it's like cloud watching... how you can see a cat and I can see a sheep, it's all to peoples points of views," Diego whispered back. I nodded, then realized he probably couldn't see me so I "Mhm'd" before sighing and rolling over, knees tucked up to my chest. I felt Diego shift in the sand turning her back to him as well, a little shiver of cold ran though me and it had nothing to do with the weather. I rolled over and wrapped an arm around his waist and felt him relax.
I wasn't sure for how long they had been sleeping, it was still dark, but unlike before there was noise. Lots of noise. My eyes opened, and I as no longer facing Diego's back, but he had his arm around my, but as soon as I realized this his hand left very suddenly, he yelled, and there was a rough laugh. I jumped up, wiggled my arm, felt her dagger out form it's wrist sheath and into my hand, pointed it at the intruder. "Now don't do that or your friend will get blood all over his clothes," he pushed the blade harder against Diego's throat and a trickle of blood ran down his neck and landed in his shirt. I glared and lowered my arm, but didn't let go of the knife. "Now, if you just hand that over to me-" he reached one hand out and I was about to give it up, but heard Sonia scream, and without thinking she slashed his arm, Diego elbowed him and manged to get out of his grasp. I turned around just as the other man drew his sword, I managed to kick it before he did anything, with Sonia just standing there in shock. "DON'T JUST STAND THERE, GET AWAY. THE HORSES" the man's eyes met mine, then he looked at the sword, and made for it. I threw myself at it, but he got there first. I bit his hand and gagged, it tasted horrible. He yelled and let go, I grabbed it and scrambled up, pointing it at him. He raised his hands and backed away slowly, I looked around for Diego and Sonia, neither were there. I made to lunge at the guy who yelled and fell backward. Laughing, I ran for the trees, hoping Sonia had the horses ready to go.

Deep sleeper though I was, I could not ignore the sounds of terror and panic. I opened my eyes and saw Diego being held by a man with a man holding a sword to his throat, and Andrea holding pointing a dagger at the man.
A second later, I was grabbed roughly up by what I could guess was another man, I screamed but before he could do more than pull his sword out, Andrea was on him. He let go of me and they were both fighting for the sword.
Their yells attracted more thieves, 4 or 5 of whom were coming out of the trees and from behind them, advancing on the princess and the stable boy. Diego, who was more skilled with a sword than I, began to battle two men at once, quickly taking them out. The other 3 men advanced on me.
Trained in capoeira as I was, I ducked and aimed a good double kick at both men, and repositioned myself standing so I could battle the third thief.
"Sonia!" Diego yelled, tossing his sword over the head of the third thief, into my hands.
"Take that! Haha!" I attacked the standing man and the two doubled over on the ground, leaving them dripping in blood, but still alive. I never killed if I could help it.
Just then, Andrea came bolting out of the trees. We jumped on our horses and stormed back out of the forest, following a path of instinct alone. Soon, it got much quieter. When they reached the waterfall, Diego was walking around with Esme, trying to locate where we had come from before. Andrea and I followed.
After a few minutes of wandering aimlessly throughout the trees, we heard new voices. This time, familiar ones.
"Andrea! Sonia!"
