With a small sigh, Clarissa stared out her window, watching as the sun began to fall behind the mountains. As soon as it was dark, Clarissa would take off this skin she was forced to wear each day, and finally be free for a few hours. She could take off this embroidered jewelry dress, and tie her hair back. Finally she could breath in the fresh air that seemed to be non existent when inside this prison she was forced to call home.
A knock on the door, forced her out of her thoughts, and she sat up straight like she’d been taught so many times. “Come in, Sadie.” Her voice sounded distant, without edge, but monotone.
As her nanny walked in, she stood, helping the elderly lady who had cared for her since she was a child sit down on Clarissa’s bed.
“Dear child, why are you still up?” Sadie croaked, folding some of the silk clothes of Clarissa’s, the same silk that seemed to scratch against her skin no matter how smooth.
“Just wishing, Sadie.” Clarissa said, still in the monotone voice.
“Wishing for what? Child, you have all you could ever wish for. I know many kids would die for things you have.”
Clarissa stared at Sadie, with placid eyes. She would give all of her things for the chance to wonder wherever she pleaded, and not stay in this coop forever. As Clarissa looked at the gold lined tiles, Sadie finished folding her clothes, then walked out, throwing the usual threat that if she wasn’t bathed and in bed in a half hour she would tell daddy.
But Clarissa was already to her closet, pulling out the shorts and t-shirt she had bought on her very first time outside of her home. She changed quickly, savoring the touch of the cotton made shorts and shirt.
With a small tug, the window was open and Clarissa was making her way down the side of her house using fire escape ladder her father had ordered installed so long ago. With a leap to the ground, she sank into darkness, following her normal path through the family garden, and behind the bush closest to the fence, where a hole that had been dug by an animal, and then dug more so Clarissa could fit through was waiting with open arms.
Clarissa quickly crawled through, and took in the deep breath of air that she so deeply missed. She was finally on the other side of the fence and free.
